These types of bullying are verbal, physical, and cyber bullying. Verbal and physical bullying involve saying mean things to the victim and personally putting a hand on them. Cyber bullying is different, this type of bullying is over the internet where the victim cannot see their bully. Surprisingly, cyberbullying is known to be the worst type of bullying. To prevent bullying as a whole, such actions need to be taken; stricter consequences, better policies, supervision, family education, and communication are necessary. Bullying is an ongoing problem and needs to be stopped as much as possible. More than 56% of students said that they have witnessed bullying. Shockingly, around 282,000 students become victimized of bullying each month. 90% of these victims have admitted that they have suffered negative side effects. Bullying at a young age has shown to be harmful, producing a major drop in grades, an increase of anxiety, and a loss of the victim’s social life. Even worse effects include self-harm and suicide. How is bullying permanently harmful? Not only is bullying harmful to a person mentally, emotionally, and physically, but the effects of bullying can follow a person for the rest of their life. A recently new study shows that serious illnesses, poor social relationships, and struggling to hold down a job often spring from the effects of being bullied in the past. This study was published in the Psychological Science journal of the Association for Psychological Science, and Scientists Dieter Wolke of the University of Warwick and William E. Copeland of Duke University Medical Center conducted this research. Dr. Wolke claimed that â€Å"We cannot continue to dismiss bullying as a harmless, almost inevitable, part of growing up, we need to change this mindset and acknowledge this as a serious problem for both the individual and the country as a whole; the effects are long-lasting and significant. †, explaining that if bullying is not prevented the victims whole lives can be affected. It is shown that bully victims are 6 times more likely to develop a smoking habit, become diagnosed with a serious illness, and get diagnosed with a psychiatric problem compared to a person not exposed to bullying. Bully victims are also more likely to develop emotional issues, especially dealing with trust and vulnerability. Children don’t easily outgrow the effects of bullying, and therefore that weighs on the adults mental health later on in life. Another study, presented in 2010 at the Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association, found that bullies were at higher risk of substance abuse, depression, anxiety and hostility than non-bullies. Thus explaining that the bad behavior of the bully evolves and gets worse. Not only do we need to stop bullying to save the victims, but to save the bullies and anyone else involved in bullying too. What can we do to stop and prevent bullying from happening in the future? It’s evident that bullying still blatantly exists and is steady growing, especially in schools. A series of actions need to be taken in order to lower the bullying rate and prevent bullying altogether. School policies often enforce rules forbidding bullying, but often aren’t followed when a bullying incident occurs. Principals, administrators, and teachers need to strictly enforce the rules stated in the no bullying policy to make sure the students in school abide by these rules and stop bullying. Mission statements, a code of conduct, rules, and a bullying reporting system has said to be needed to help the prevention for bullying. They all establish an environment where this act is not acceptable. Supervision is also very valuable to stopping bullying. Many teachers or administrators don’t take the time out to actually observe the students interactions with one another which gives the children the freedom to bully one another. Being more observant in an environment where children and adolescence makes it easier to catch bullying and stop it. Engaging families and the communities can help prevent bullying by working together to send a unified message against bullying. Establishing a school safety committee is also important. Communication is always key, therefore it is always very important to talk to someone about bullying. Bullying cases should always be reported to teachers, administrators, and especially parents. To widely prevent bullying, spreading the word is key, talking to children and adolescence about bullying can help them better understand the concept and know what to do when they witness it or become victimized by bullying. Children often seek advice from elders so it is important that we keep that line of communication open. From about 2nd grade to my 9th grade of high school I was a victim of bullying myself. Still to this day I from the way bullying has affected me mentally and emotionally. Depression, insecurities, and difficulties in my social relationships are only a few of the effects that I experienced from bullying. Bullying may not seem like a big deal but its harmful and should be tackled before more innocent children and adolescence and victimized and traumatized. Taking action against bullying is a big step in order to stop this country wide issue. Creating rules, better supervision, educating the community, and communication are all things we can do as a community to start the prevention of bullying. Essay Sample on John Dewey and His Philosophy John Dewey had a long and prosperous career as a philosopher and as an educator. Tanner and Tanner have since called him the greatest of American Educational Philosophers (Tanner and Tanner, 1995). John Deweys very influential philosophy has been a guiding force throughout the twentieth century. His philosophy is most evident today through his many writings. Probably most notable among these was his book Democracy and Education. After nearly twenty years of practicing his philosophy in laboratory schools he published Experience and Education. This book is a concise refinement of his most popular work. It is here that he expresses a reformulation of the concepts presented in Democracy and Education. Educational Theory of the Day In 1859 the English philosopher Herbert Spencer asked a very profound question in his essay What Knowledge is of Most Worth. This question proved to be a turning point for what was to come(Tanner and Tanner, 1995) for it influenced many who came to follow. Specifically it influenced a young educator by the name of John Dewey who began his teaching career in 1879 in the small town of Oil City, Pennsylvania. Soon thereafter John Dewey left Pennsylvania for graduate school at Johns Hopkins University. There he received his Ph.D. in 1884 (Levine, 1998). Prior to 1900, education had little to offer in the way of a theoretical framework (Wilburg, 1998). The belief at the time was that schools should require strong discipline and that children should not talk to one another; all communication should be between the teacher and the class (Tyler, 1975). A popular curricula of the day centered around McGuffys Readers, which taught American ideals and morals (Ornstein and Hunkins, 1998). John Deweys influential books School and Society and Interest and Effort in Education were published in 1902. These works carried the same theme as many of his later works. Namely that students interest are an important component in any curriculum. Soon after Dewey published his book Democracy and Education, one of his former graduate students Heard Kilpatrick, introduced what he called the project method. This methodology engages the student in a number of projects. The projects he defined as a purposeful activity carried to completion in a natural setting (Tyler,1975). A number of schools adopted curriculum plans such as these and, thus began the controversial Progressive Education movement. This Progressive Education movement threaten the standards of the day and caused a great deal of controversy. Dewey speaks of it often in his book Experience and Education. He describes people as having a Either-Or philosophy. Particularly that they can see no intermediate possibilities between traditional education and that of the progressive movement. He does not propose one is better than the other simply that each has its advantages and disadvantages. As one might expect the New education he proposes as an alternative is closely linked to the ideals of the progressives. Deweys main concern is that traditional education produces students that are schooled in the basic concepts of a subject matter, yet have no way to deal with real world problems because they have not been taught problem solving techniques. Dewey soon after making a description of the benefits of the new education calls attention to the fact that there is a need for a theory of experience. Remember that at the time of Deweys writing (1938) there was little in the way of a theory of experience. Cognitive Psychology was still 20 years away in the future. It was at this point Behaviorism was the theory of the day. Ideas of memory and cognition were being downplayed. The need for a theory of experience, the name of Deweys second chapter, makes some very valid points. One being Education and Experience can NOT be equated with one another. Some experience as he says can be miseducative. Any experience can be miseducative if it arrest or distorts growth. His inverse statement then is that educative experience is growth. This truth is a theme throughout the book. Social Control and Education As in Democracy and Education, Dewey is very concerned that traditional education is an autocratic social dynamic. This top down approach is a limitation to personal growth. Dewey makes a very convincing argument that a traditional school room with its fixed rows of desks and straight jacket chain gang procedures need to be done away with. Dewey rather dramatically calls attention to the similarities of a student and a slave by describing Platos definition of a slave. It is someone who executes the purposes of another. Perhaps it is time to reexamine our handling of students in the classroom. Personally, I felt a great freedom moving from the K-12 environment to a college classroom. Was I mystically transformed in the intervening summer? This is evident in many classrooms today. He proposes in the place of a traditional classroom a more laboratory type setting where students are free to grow and learn. He describes education as having a social nature. The tradition schoolroom limits this social nature and even prohibits it. The traditional schoolroom even holds silence as a prime virtue. Deweys Enduring Legacy Many saw an end to the progressive movement with John Deweys death in 1953. The movement may have passed even before his death. But his ideas continue to survive in other educational reformers works. Dewey was if anything a driving force for change in Americas schools. Even though Dewey disdained the -isms, the current constructivism has much in common with his progressive movement. It is an active process in which learners construct new ideas or concepts through experience. Deweys liberal ideas caused quite a controversy in his day. In many ways they still do. All paradigm shifts, (be they the Copernican universe, evolution through natural selection, or a call for freedom in education) take time to be accepted.

Vincent’s name is symbolic because his name is the same as the famous Vincent Van Gogh, a painter that was insane and ended up shooting himself like Vincent Grey; Grey is symbolic because grey is the color of being in between, it’s the color of neither black nor white, being in the middle of two worlds as Vincent Grey was. Lastly, in â€Å"The Sixth Sense† M. Night Shyamalan uses motif to explain extreme emotional pain that can be damaging to someone. Red is a big significance in the movie because when something is about to go wrong, the color red appears. When something frightening is about to happen somewhere on the screen, the color red appears. Another example of motif is the white hair on the back of Vincent and Cole’s head, because some hair on trauma victims goes white. By Shyamalan having Vincent and Cole sharing this feature, it shows a deep connection between them. Using symbolism and motif people are able to figure out the ending of the movie before it ends. Dr. Malcolm Crowe has been dead for the entire movie, and Cole Sear is able to deal with his problems. Dr. Crowe came to Cole to help him with his problem with being afraid of ghosts, but Cole also helped Dr. Crowe by helping him to move on. Cultural Observation Essay

Cultural Observation Culture is the sum total of learned beliefs, values, and customs in which a people of a particular society live. Culture is dynamic and always changing but retains patterns that form its basic infrastructure. Many aspects of a people’s society make up one’s culture including religion, economy, language, politics, etc. Cultures are not finite and in many instances have there own number of sub cultures within them. This variation among cultures brings about man consequences between populations, which can be positive or negative. I have been given the task to use participant observation in order to form a complete report on the daily social interactions of humans in the Saint Louis area. The location I chose is in the middle of a higher learning environment known as a college campus. The area lies in the middle of the campus and has a large structure with a device that measures and tracks time. It is a frequently used path by the students of the campus, which allows for many social observations to be made. As stated earlier the space is a walking highway for students with the most traffic-taking place in the morning at the end of each hour for a period of about ten minutes. The pathway is a large round a bout that circles around the clock tower structure with 4 perpendicular paths continuing off from the circle. I sat on a large concrete staircase that overlooks the circle, for my observations. I sat for one and a half hours observing the following. For the duration of my observation, which began at 11:00am I had many people sitting on the stair case fixture in front of me. At one point there were a total of 23 people sitting on the concrete stairs. These 23 people were paired off in groups of no more than 6. When the time came closer to the end of the hour, there was a dramatic increase in traffic flow around the clock structure. Many of the people walked at a steady pace and seemed to have been walking solo. Some people walked in groups but if it was a group of more than one the majority walked in pairs. As the new hour began the traffic flow dramatically dropped. The make up of the study population varied in many categories. The ages of the people were predominantly that of 18-21 year olds, with occasional middle-aged people and young professionals. During the rush of traffic it seemed to have a larger population of females than males walking through the area. This was also found for the people who chose to sit on the concrete stairs. Of the people who sat down, 15 of them were female and the rest male. During the rush I noticed many different ethnicities that ranged from Caucasian white, to Asian, to Middle Eastern, and African American. Disregarding race, a pattern among the people arose during observation. The females leaned towards wearing more high cost garments than the males did. This related to the observation that many women seemed to be of high economic status in comparison to males. In regards to discernable space I found that females were much more prone to putting minimal space between themselves when interacting. Males seemed to keep a good distance from each other while interacting. For the majority, during the rush of walking traffic, people followed the rule of walking to there right while entering the circle even though this rule was not stated on any sign that I could see. Some people were more aggressive in there walking patterns and people on bicycle contraptions were permitted the right of way in most occasions. Physical interactions were most abundant among females and males who interacted. Males who were walking with a female had less space between them than males who were walking with another male. People sitting on the stairs would occasional engage in physical contact with the highest percentage of outcomes being a laugh following the physical touch. Overall I noticed a pattern that people of the same â€Å"race† for the majority stuck together, giving the impression of subcultures with in the population. Given the location, I concluded that the reason for all the people in the walking rush had the shared commitment of attending classes for learning purposes. For the people who sat down on the stairs it was much harder to find a reason for there public social interaction. The weather was optimal that day which would most likely attract such a leisurely activity response. The population was visually extremely diverse but some common trends were found that differentiated people. The most apparent difference was that of the nature of the people of Asian descent. They more than anyone kept to there own group and clearly spoke a different language than the rest of the population. This could be a barrier between them and the rest of the people who seem to speech the dominant language of the area. From my observations I have been able to determine many things about the population of Saint Louis. More research must be done especially with people of different ages in order to get a more accurate picture of how people in Saint Louis behave but from my observations many patterns stuck out among people from ages 18-21. One of the most puzzling aspects was the wearing of a garment on the top of a person’s head. I could not find a distinct pattern as to what type of people or what situations these head garments were supposed to be for. The only practical usage I came up with was the use of it to keep the sun of their eyes, but many did not use it for this purpose. If it pertains to simply a fashion accessory it would appear to be more common among younger male populations. Another observation was the commonality of wearing t-shirts or other garments that either said Saint Louis University or Saint Louis in some form. From this I have determined that people are proud of the organizations and areas they have some sort of investment in. This also led me to believe that people use their garments to communicate subtly to other people certain information about themselves. A majority of garments worn had some form of there language written on them. Overall more research must be done on the human race to cross-reference these ideas. It is obvious that culture is dynamic and works on several different levels in this complex society of people. Simply observing can tells us many things about there culture but will only get us so far. We must make plans to immerse ourselves in there actual culture to truly get an accurate picture of what it means to be part of Saint Louis, and ultimately, what it means to be human.
